Why are police force personnel generalists ?
A policeman issues tickets , arrests people , kicks down doors and eats doughnuts.
Why can't these functions be specialized ? and contracted out on occasion ?
Speed traps can be roboticized. They are not about safety anyway. They are revenue generators. Police should not spend time pursuing victimless crimes. Prostitution , drug use and sales, .... are none of the police's business.
Plus a *real policeman* should have job description as follows:
Protects the public from danger... risks life if necessary.... held responsible for mistakes made ...
Who am I kidding ???? Such people do not exist.....

The above link references a class where students were asked to stomp Jesus. This exercise was in poor taste and probably steps over the line regarding the power balance between teacher and student.
I think the important part is that many people have learned to be professional victims. They have brought being offended to a fine , fine art. I find it tiresome. Don't participate if you don't want to. Walk away. They are stomping on a piece of paper. If Jesus exists ( which I doubt ) .... then Jesus can take care of the infidels.
I don't think the university should have apologized.

Let me hasten to say that I feel that human knowledge is too sparse for GW to be acted on. There is too much uncertainty. And there is even less certainty about HCGW ( Human Caused Global Warming ).
Thought Experiment
Let us pretend that GW is caused by humans. That the sea level is going to rise and cover NYC. That hurricanes and tornadoes will ravage the lands. That sweltering heat will kill all the plants ..... What should a thinking person do ? ( Assuming it is not too late )

#1 Government programs have a high failure rate... often the only winners are the friends of the politicians... The record of the government is pretty mediocre and most of the folks who take government jobs are at the low end of the bell curve.
#2 Academics are a major source for great ideas. They often suffer from the myopia of having a safe job..... no *skin in the game* so to speak.... Check out what Nassim Nicholas Taleb ( author of *The Black Swan* ) has to say...

Government operates roads like a pinball machine

Lots of flashing lights and holes where you can lose your game ball. Ball gets batted around a lot.
I sometimes drive north on Santa Fe in the Denver, CO metro area. The powers that be have set up a speed trap. It is a photo radar van. It is located right after the speed limit drops from 50 mph to 25 mph with a few blocks. The added bonus for the revenue collectors is that it is a *fines doubled* area. Another added bonus is that is located in the chaos of a construction zone. Picking out small signs advising the speed limit and the presence of a radar trap are is unlikely in the welter of competing visual cacophony. Road construction in the Denver area most resembles western cow patties ( excrement ). #1 Located randomly over the landscape #2 Suddenly appears ... gooey and hardens into an intractable mess. #3 Stinks #4 Never cleaned up #5 Sustenance for vermin
Government employees and VIPS are self-selected. They love to push people around. They love to be officious. What could be grander than a road project that gives everything they want plus they get to SOPM.
The above is unconscionable and chips away at the happiness of the planet's sophonts.

Returning from Littleton, CO on a Sunday ( Easter ... no less ) I encountered the same speed trap on Santa Fe. This is set up to collect fines ( $$$ ). There are no workers on the ( endless ) project... no equipment ... other than the radar van. I was going 40 mph. I do not know if I was one of the lucky ones. I am dropping a note to Hickenlooper and whatever city that speed trap resides in.
Later....... on the very same return trip.... I exited I-70 at Lowell ( going west ). I wanted to turn left at Lowell. No way I could do that. There were 7 cop cars blocking the ramp. I had to turn right. Everyone looked relaxed. I could not discern if there were civilians involved. No apparent reason for 7 cars to be clustered unless they were waiting for a doughnut order. I stopped and asked them why they were lounging around. ( That last sentence was a lie & joke. ) I am writing this from my office and not from jail.

Today a friend of mine found an iPhone on the street. He brought it back to my place and was playing with it. "What's that ?" , I said.
He said he found it and he was messing around with it. I said it looked like a working phone. Did he intend to contact the owner and return it ? Nah.... he said.
Why don't you take care of it ? he said
Okay, I will....
I tried various things and eventually called AT&T ( the service for the phone ) and gave them the number of the phone. AT&T said they would connect me with the owner. What I got instead was the Denver Police .... who started badgering me. I don't want to deal with the police .... I want to give the phone to the owner. A woman on the phone starts crying, claims to be the owner, and calls me a son of a bitch. She says I am being mean to her because I am not interested in her crying jag. She says her car was broken into. I do not care. I will leave the phone on my front porch in a box. Come get it.
So I wait outside alongside the box and 2 police cars and a black SUV arrive. A woman gets out of the SUV. "Here is your phone" , I say. I hand her a bag with the phone in it. "Don't ever bother me again."
Then..... Hurray.... they all leave. I hope this is the end of it.

In my story, some youngsters are raised on video games that are similar to MicroSoft Flight Simulator. They are kept largely ignorant of the world outside their enclave. What they are not told is that they are being trained to fly manned drones on suicide missions. When they actually go on a mission, they will not realize it is any different than any other day of their life. It will be the last day of their life. Using GPS information, they will fly in under the radar , disguised as something benign. They will fly to their target and crash the drone. BOOM ..... They are dead and lots of collateral damage is achieved. Way cooler than strapping explosives around your chest.
I abhor violence.... so I will not be organizing this ... for sure , someone will do this.
The US plans to use drones to spy and kill everywhere. They forget that something so simple and cheap can become a deadly weapon against a Global Empire that is exposed worldwide, maybe a guerrilla war-winning weapon like the IED's in Iraq and Afghanistan, but much smaller, hard to detect, and cheap.

Is automation a job killer ?

History shows us that increased technology leads to more goodies and more leisure. This may or may not be a good thing. For most it is good... for the ditch digger out of a job... it is a bummer.
Taken to it's logical conclusion... in the future a lot of humans will not have any real purpose in life other than to consume. We see this happening already. In the U.S. , many people do nothing all day. Many of them are in government. Abundance brings boredom in some cases.
I vote that we let technology proceed.....

Obama's healthcare ... greatest good ?
Is Obama's healthcare program 'utilitarian' -- does it provide the greatest benefit for the greatest number?
I guess that the greatest number of people being permitted to withstand multi-layers of bureaucratic paper-shuffling, and physically shuffling to multiple offices is “good” in the way that “no child left behind” is “good”. The question then becomes, what exactly does that ‘greatest good healthcare’ consist of? It consists of multi-layers of government workers getting or keeping jobs to “administer” this leviathan of a “program”. It consists of physicians and other healthcare workers buried under paperwork that clutters the path toward providing healthcare. In the end, “the program” dominates over actual benefit to people in need of good healthcare. But I guess it at least spreads the obstacles to great health benefits to “the greatest number”.

NASA has twice had space shuttles that disintegrated .... one going up and one coming down... both times, some members of NASA believed there was a problem before the disaster occurred. Should the crew be told about these concerns ?

Clint turned in one of the most brilliant performances of all time at the Republican convention in 2012 ..... It is very unlikely that there is a god or a ultimate universal creator. There is no evidence to support this concept. I have no doubt that believing in god makes a lot of people happy. Fantasy can make us happy from time to time. ( So I am going to presume that god does not exist. ) Human rights do not flow from god since god does not exist. Human do NOT have rights. god does NOT hand out rights.
What is given to humans are privileges or courtesies. When you walk down the street, most humans give you the courtesy of not bumping into you ; no one rushes up and robs you. Your car windows are not smashed every time it is parked outside. Much of life consists of people practicing a philosophy of live and let live.
The courtesies are a result of humans becoming civilized. The result of people becoming smarter and more aware of themselves and their neighbors. A human is taught to be civilized and they can also be taught to be crazy and vindictive and violent. A human can be taught that muslims are crazy. A human can be taught that non-muslims are the devil. A human can be taught that the US government is synonymous with the people that live within the borders of America. A human can be taught that US soldiers are heroes and that other soldiers are cowards, terrorists, madmen. A human can be taught they are an irrevocable part of a wolfpak ....that is .... they are an American citizen. They are America and America is them.
Humans have a born-with part of their brain that has developed over a million years. This brain segment was very useful when humans were learning about fire and battling mastodons and avoiding volcanic lava flow. I call this segment ... the lizard brain. This segment is mostly worthless in modern life... it lives on and has great influence in situations where it should not. One thing the lizard brain is not interested in is extending courtesies to others. The lizard brain is more or less anti-civilization.
The lizard brain seeks power and affluence. It conflates these with a safe and successful life. Owning slaves is okay by the lizard brain. Theft and violence is okay by the lizard brain. Fraud is okay by the lizard brain. The lizard brain lives by the Iron Rule ...... do it to them before they do it to you. The lizard brain would never think of extending courtesies to others unless it was part of a scam. Politicians rely heavily on their lizard brain.
Rights and freedom and liberty come from humans who are transcending their lizard brain. Such humans are moving toward a state I call SOPHONT2.0. They use their intelligence to evaluate their situation. They use their intelligence to plot their life strategy. They look at the big picture and they consider the long term. They like freedom and liberty. They consider individuals one at a time. They do not group people according to irrelevant group characteristics. ( Such as skin color , sex , age , height , place of origin, .... ) Violence is the last approach they consider.
Freedom , liberty , love , friendship are given to you. You cannot obtain these using a gun. You must give in order to receive these valuable courtesies.
