Any dangerous technology including nuclear power generation has been given a wakeup call. Such technologies must be used in a manner that they can survive multiple strikes by nature. This of course should be weighed against a cost-benefit ratio and people will be quibbling forever about the value of a human life. I think the value of an average human life should be pegged at 2 million dollars. ( I pulled this number out of a hat based on the wildly varying values ranging from zero in some parts of the world to 1 billion dollars by the EPA )
Think about what will happen in Japan if there is another earthquake of magnitude 8 or greater. Along with resultant tsunami, we can kiss all the on-going rescue efforts goodbye.
