These guys are from my era and they were examples of sharing, caring, non-czar like characters. I will miss Bob Pease in particular. He reminds me a great deal of one of my mentors ..... the late Howard Michels .... another very very generous person. The image of HM is poor quality... and is the only one I have.

The above is a quote from someone who trying to provide low paying ( but great money for refugees ) computer jobs for refugees. As is so often the case, government officials are preventing refugees from improving their lot.

This is one of the many reasons why I hate and fear government .... especially the one that oppresses me directly.... the USG .... and of course the Denver building department.

Oracle is seeking major damages in its lawsuit against Google over Android in a move that reflects how the search giant’s intellectual property headaches may just continue to get worse. Should Google lose this IP battle, Android cuts would go to Oracle and Microsoft.
Florian Mueller highlighted a heavily redacted Google response to a damages argument made by Oracle expert witness Iain Cockburn, a Boston University professor. Cockburn argued that Google would owe unspecified damages if Android was found to infringe on Java.
The actual amount wasn’t disclosed, but Google did note that all Android revenue was included in Cockburn’s royalty calculation. Oracle also wants Google’s ad revenue from Android although Cockburn didn’t outline that argument directly. Oracle also argues for a 50 percent royalty rate.

Results of a Gallup poll released over the weekend reveal that more than nine in 10 Americans believe in God. Ninety-two percent of Gallup's 1,018 respondents (hailing from all 50 states) answered "yes" when asked whether they believed in God.
The pollsters noted:

Despite the many changes that have rippled through American society over the last 6 ½ decades, belief in God as measured in this direct way has remained high and relatively stable. Gallup initially used this question wording in November 1944, when 96% said "yes." That percentage dropped to 94% in 1947, but increased to 98% in several Gallup surveys conducted in the 1950s and 1960s.

A fight breaks out in-flight over a reclined seat. The crew opts to return to the D.C. airport. Overreaction?

I'm expected to say something about last week's in-flight rumble aboard a United Airlines flight headed from Washington, D.C., to Accra, Ghana.
When a flight broke out on Flight UA 990 shortly after takeoff -- apparently over a reclined seat -- the crew elected to return to Dulles Airport, and did so under escort from a pair of F-16 fighters, dumping thousands of gallons of jet fuel along the way.
For airlines, diversions like this are a logistical nightmare, and the trickle-down costs can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. You've got fuel costs, crew costs, passenger rebooking and misconnect costs, and so forth. Not only was the outbound flight to Accra delayed, but the return flight as well, affecting hundreds of people.
Considering the stakes, the question people are asking is this one: Was the return really necessary? Couldn't they have just kept going rather than inconveniencing everybody else on the plane?

The Road to Better Highways

What should the federal government do about the nation's highways? On May 17, Independent Institute Research Fellow Gabriel Roth addressed this question at a hearing on financing twenty-first-century infrastructure convened by the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance. His recommendation: the federal government should fund no transportation infrastructure at all, and the federal Highway Trust Fund should be phased out.

Getting rid of federal financing would encourage state and private-sector funding, Roth argued. In addition to describing the current role of the private sector in road transportation--and why that role should be enlarged--he sketched a fascinating picture of what a high-tech private road system might look like. One alternative would use a payment system based on GPS technology.

Here's how it might work: Every vehicle would contain a device--an in-vehicle unit--that would record the vehicle's data about miles traveled, locations, and times, and the owner would submit some of that data (distances traveled, for example) to a billing agency. The biller would debit the vehicle owner's account and credit the road owners' accounts. This way the privacy of the vehicle owner would be guaranteed. Also, mobile inspectors could ensure that vehicles that use the new charging system carry the right equipment and that it operates property. The use of surveillance cameras could be minimized. "Payment could be made directly to road providers (in the public or private sectors) with no need to send them to the federal government," Roth writes. Science fiction? Hardly. More than 900,000 vehicles in Germany and Slovakia have utilized a GPS-based payment system.

A promising new birth control method for men that's more easily reversible than vasectomy has been developed in India. Called RISUG (Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance or Vasalgel in the U.S) the method is claimed to be 100 percent effective in trials, doesn't contain controversial hormone therapy and it lasts a minimum of 10 years.
The procedure involves injecting a non-toxic polymer (gel) above the scrotum, rather than making an incision as is done in vasectomies. The polymer then acts as a security system, coating the inside walls of the vas deferens (the passage way for sperm above the scrotum) which chemically incapacitates the sperms as they go past, making them unable to fertilize an egg.
"Within an hour, the drugs produce an electrical charge that nullifies the electrical charge of the spermatozoa, preventing it from penetrating the ovum," says Dr. Guha, who developed the contraceptive at IIT Kharagpur in India.
The results are similar to a traditional vasectomy but with added advantages of it being simple, pain free (after the injection part!) and easily reversible. If a patient wishes to restore fertility, after months or years, the polymer can be simply flushed out of the system with another injection.
After testing RISUG on over 250 volunteers, Dr. Guha reported little or no side effects other than slight scrotal swelling in some men immediately after the injection, which dissipates after a few weeks.
Inexpensive to manufacture and simple to administer, RISUG could offer a cost effective solution to unwanted pregnancies in developing countries. In developed nations; it would give women a safe long-term option, free from the many risks associated with long-term birth-control-pill use, whilst also potentially reducing the number of abortions. It would give men a more comfortable and hassle free solution from condoms and an attractive option over having a vasectomy.

Divide 10.9 Billion dollars by 17,000 lives saved ==> $640,000 per person ........ I hope I got the math right .... Is that a good expenditure of money ? I doubt it. First you have to believe that the EPA is NOT being overly optimistic. Next you have to believe that $640K per person is a good way to spend money to "save" people. I can think of better uses for the money. More bang for the buck.

EPA Rules on Mercury Will Cost Billions, ‘Do Nothing’

The Environmental Protection Agency has issued nearly 1,000 pages of new rules ordering American power plants to significantly reduce their emissions of mercury and other air pollutants, a move that will reportedly cost electricity producers $10.9 billion a year.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson claims the rules will save 17,000 lives and generate up to $140 billion in health benefits, but “there is no factual basis for these assertions,” two experts maintain.

In an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal, Harvard University scientist Willie Soon, an expert on mercury and public health issues, and Paul Driessen, senior policy adviser for the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, point out that the United States currently emits only 41 to 48 tons of mercury per year.

I believe that when someone buys something... they have the right to do anything they want with it ... including reverse engineer it and share the results with the world. They can put any logo on it that they want and they can set it on fire if they want.

What they cannot do .......

Apple's iOS devices have rapidly become popular giveaway items for businesses seeking to boost user interest and participation, encouraging customers to sign up or interact with the businesses in some way for chances to win an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

But as noted by Fortune, the vast majority of these promotions run afoul of Apple's published guidelines (PDF) on third-party promotions. Those guidelines lay out exactly what procedures companies looking to offer Apple products as promotional items must follow, most notably barring iPads, iPhones, and iPhone gift cards entirely from such promotions and requiring "special circumstances" and a minimum order of 250 units for iPod touch giveaways.

Apple has laid out some pretty strict rules about what it thinks you can and can't do with its products. Among them: (I quote)

- iPad, iPhone and the iPhone Gift Card may not be used in third-party promotions.
- iPod touch is only allowed to be used in special circumstances and requires a minimum purchase of 250 units.
- You may NOT use the Myriad Set font on or in connection with web sites, products, packaging, manuals, or promotional/advertising materials.
- The use of "free" as a modifier in any Apple product reference in a prominent manner (headlines, call- outs, etc.) is prohibited.
- You must submit all marketing materials related to the promotion of Apple products to Apple for review.

According to the report, Apple has only just recently begun reaching out to companies to enforce the guidelines, despite that fact that the document has been around for quite some time.

The recording industry just came up with yet another way to throw its customers in prison. Tennessee is enacting a law to make it illegal to share passwords for "entertainment subscription services" like Netflix and Rhapsody. From the Associated Press:

State lawmakers in country music's capital have passed a groundbreaking measure that would make it a crime to use a friend's login - even with permission - to listen to songs or watch movies from services such as Netlix or Rhapsody.

The news above emphasizes that governments , politicians, regulators are paid off by people who don't care about regular people. They just care about money and power and they like whoever can supply it to them.

Fast-rising GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain, the former Godfather’s Pizza CEO emerging as a strong contender in the Iowa caucuses, blasted President Barack Obama’s leadership abilities in an exclusive Newsmax interview, saying Obama “could not run one Godfather’s pizza restaurant.”

Cain, who has been rising fast in the polls after his impressive showing in last month’s presidential debate in South Carolina, called the president as an indecisive leader who has lost most Americans' confidence.

“The president has demonstrated that he lacks leadership in a whole lot of ways [and] could not run a company,” Cain told Newsmax. “And I don’t mean to be disrespectful: He could not run one Godfather’s pizza restaurant.

“Instead of being decisive, he dithers,” Cain said. “Instead of having a management structure where he can entrust to some key people responsibility, he has an organization that is unmanageable. When he added 36 czars to go with the ones he already inherited, that is an unmanageable structure. So nobody knows who’s in charge."

The article above demonstrates on of the fallacies of the the modern democracy ..... That one man or an oligarchy can control a large group of people effectively. By any measure, this kind of control has always been a failure. Whether one examines economic success or the happiness of individuals or success in war or freedom indices or some other group metric .......... the implementation of the IPPP ( Intelligent Puzzle Pieces Paradigm ) produces better results than central control. Stated another way ( tip of the hat to Judge Napolitano ) , if each individual is given freedom to pursue their personal goals, the result is superior to any other approach.

The fact that humans continue to cling to outmoded methods of organization can be explained by the Lizard Brain theory. Humans are processing the present with brains that evolved starting one million years ago !
